Let's take a look at some step by step tutorials and techniques I use to paint people, specifically focusing on how to paint eyes with acrylic paint. This part is about painting and does not cover drawing portraits with the eyes. Every single time that you paint an eye make sure it contains these elements; unabridged precise shape, the upper and lower eye lid, the pupil, the iris, the sclera or white of the eye, the upper and lower lashes, the eyebrow, the corner membrane, and the catch-light.

Components of the Eye. There are a lot of components of the eye and it is the most complex facial feature to paint. If your painting is not to be too detailed, you can omit the eye lids the corner membrane and maybe even the lashes. The pupil should be black or extremely dark using burnt umber and it usually has a reflection in it. This reflection or catch-light should be two toned, matching the whites of the eyes. The iris will have some tones and is never just one color. The whites of the eyes are never pure white but shades of gray, and will most likely not be the brightest spot on the face or the whole painting. I usually add a tiny bit of red in the corner membrane.

Also, when painting the eyes, remember proportion. There is most usually a distance of one eye width between the two eyes.

Painting the Eye. Paint in the white first. Now paint in the iris. Fill in the iris area with most of the iris color. Add specks of other color within the iris. The iris is usually quite a few colors. Brown eyes have a touch of black and maybe even yellow. Study your subject for precise color variation. Use an out lineof a darker shade like burnt sienna and figure the whole iris. Now with the same burnt sienna paint in a pupil. Depending on how the light hits the eye will depend on where the catch-light of the iris will be. Make sure that the catch-light hits both eyes in generally the same spot however. A line painted in over the top of the eye will serve as the upper eyelid. Some population have a specific line to define the lower lid as well. The eyelids should be painted how you see them.

Eyelashes When painting eyelashes, paint what you see as well. In reality peoples eyelashes rarely protrude straight up like a cartoon! Eyelashes are usually seen as protruding slightly upward and sideways. They are usually in small clumps as well. I have found that sometimes when painting a man's eyelashes, less is more. Sometimes they get one or two tiny lashes and that is it. The same hold true for children and even women. Paint a few representative lines to indicate lashes, step back and look at it before going on. Also remember not to create them too long as they will look unnatural.

Eyebrows The last parts of the eye to mention are the brows. You can assuredly overdo the brows if you aren't careful. Again, study your subject and quote lessons in "How To" books for practice.

Finish Details. You will add tiny but leading details now to quit the eye.

When you add the light or whitened highlights to the bottom lip do so in vertical strokes. You should leave a few stroke lines to indicate lines in the skin that make up the lips.

If your field is a person wearing lip stick you could be done with the lips because lipstick sometimes shows a defined line. But if the subjects' lips are natural, you should slowly blend the lip color into the flesh color of the face so that a hard edge does not exist where there is none.

Final Touches

The last thing to do with a ended mouth is to add shadows directly above the top lip where the crease under the nose is, and directly under the bottom lip and in the chin area. Grayscale reference photo
If you have the means to convert your color photo reference into a grayscale, or black and white print, this can be a great advantage. The grayscaled photo can improve your quality to see the ranges of value you will need to use. These ranges could be the very darkest areas compared to the very lightest, giving you the occasion to recognize the deepest shadows, or in contrast, the apex of a brighter contour or curve. Other benefit of the black and white or grayscale print is, that if you can adjust the value, it helps if you can originate an highly light and/or an highly dark print. Sometimes with a much lighter print, you can pick up more information in the very darkest areas. And often, if you can make a much darker print, you can pick up many of the slightest variations in value good in the subtle contours of the face for instance.

Start with dark

Apply your values in order of darkest to lightest. fabricate the darkest value first in all the relative areas, so that you will be able to speak their proper association with each other and you will always have a sense of where you should stop. This will help you speak an appropriate disagreement with the other values ranges in your rendering. Instead of relying on the shade of a singular skin tone, first rely on the features that will help you prescribe a singular ethnic look or character trait. Even though the skin may be darker, don't over do it. Remember, be careful to use only as much value, as you need. Then you will always have a darker value reserved to use. Learn to remarked even the slightest shift in value and range. The wider range of values that you are able to create, the more you will be able to capture and express.

Add depth
Depth and contour are two of the most prominent things that you want to perform within any area or set of values you are working with. To imply depth-whether it be a contour, or a cut off dimension, disagreement is always a critical factor. If you can see an uninterrupted range of value go in and out of a recession, it is a contour. Darker values should be used in the deeper shadowed areas to imply depth, and this is where plane transitions will be a great advantage. 5. Invest!

Invest your time, energy and yes even your money to be able to perfect this craft. It will take time. But as the old saying goes institution makes perfect. If at first you don't follow try and try again. You'll be amazed at how you progress along the way.

As far as oil painting goes it's not as scary as some population think. It does not have to be a major expense, in fact, that is the point, in order to free yourself up, it needs to be as miniature expense as possible. Find some old junk.. Old jewelry, even Christmas wrapping paper or weird things you come across. Next take it all surface and Play! Just Play.. No pressure for anything to turn out. Dump stuff on the plywood and be a Pollack for the day. Let it dry and then go back and play again over the same piece, construction up a patina effect. Metallic paints are great for this too!

Ok, so after that you should feel a unavoidable sense of relaxation about painting. Now lets try some oils on canvas! How fun! (Yup no grumbling, this is gonna be fun.)

When oils are thinned down with turpentine they have a lot more ease. You can make it all unquestionably sloshiy (my word for messy) and Playful! That doesn't mean you only use thinned down oils but just think about that and use it as you will. Start out thin and end with thick.

First paint a background on as large a canvas as you can. The larger the better. I find that if you paint a small work it is unquestionably more scary. You tend to tighten up and fret more. When the canvas is big you Know you have to unquestionably get in there and paint or it will take you forever. There is relaxation to it.

Try 'sketching' with your sloshy colors and oil paints. starting with your darkest colors 'slather' on your base, be it fantasy art warrior women, images taken from female photography, or lords of the middle ages Play. Then let it sit for a day or two. Go back after some drying time and add your medium toned colors, then let that sit.. Give yourself a rest for a fresh look at your improve as well as some drying time. Lastly add your lights and highlights.
